2014 Season of New Plays for New Audiences Garret Schneider's ULTRASOUND launched our second season to critical acclaim from audiences comprised of first-time theatre-goers and our core group of regular supporters. Our #PlayLocal movement is thriving as new patrons discover what we already know: new plays in the hands of talented professionals are exciting, breathtaking, and unforgettable.
Still on tap for 2014 are two more World Premieres beginning in August with SCARECROWS WILL NEVER SEE THE SUNSET: THE LEGENDS OF SMACKOVER by Darren V. Michael.Set during the 1920s oil boom in the rural South, SCARECROWS is an explosive tale of oil, blood, madness, and love. If you took a ride with us for last summer's hit Southern Gothic crime thriller DEVIL SEDAN, you won't want to miss this period drama. The Legends, a close-knit farming family, find themselves forced to confront the changes oil brings -- to the landscape and their familiar way of life. Blood is thicker than water, yes. The question becomes: Is oil thicker than blood? SCARECROWS runs August 16-24, 2014.
The final full-scale production of 2014 marks a milestone for Playhouse Nashville as we premiere our very first devised piece written and created specifically by our artists for local audiences. Fans of 1950s drive-in science-fiction films who love aliens, ray guns, and low-budget special effects -- this one is for you! Written by a collective of some of our core artists -- including Rebekah Durham, Rachel Agee, and Laura Crockarell, under the guidance of Nate Eppler -- our UNTITLED SCI-FI COMEDY hits the stage at 1933 Elm Hill Pike. A Halloween treat better than wax lips & those tricky peanut butter chews for sure. UNTITLED SCI-FI COMEDY runs October 25-November 2. We conclude our 2014 Season of New Plays for New Audiences in December with the 8th edition of THE TEN MINUTE PLAYHOUSE. The Playhouse is like the songwriters circle of the theatre community where the audience gets to sample the newest work of local writers performed by volunteer actors before participating in moderated feedback sessions with the authors. Featuring a total of 12 original plays presented in staged readings over two nights, December's event will put us over the century mark with more than 100 new plays presented since 2011. Join us for the phenomenon that started the #PlayLocal movement. Remember, all TEN MINUTE PLAYHOUSE tickets are now FREE! THE TEN MINUTE PLAYHOUSE runs December 14 & 15.
